Counseling Psychology

Counseling psychology has become a necessary category in the world of today where people are constantly encountering large amounts of stressful situations and having to find ways to cope with depressing occurrences. A counseling psychologist has become very helpful in helping people deal with such occurrences because studies show that there are specific ways to help people cope productively. A counseling psychologist completes many studies on how the human mind works so that they are able to assist their patients with whatever treatment is needed. We are all aware of the purpose of counseling psychology but aren’t familiar as to why this has come about into existence. The main goal of a psychologist should be to help you as a client with whatever issues you are having to deal with.

If you want to take a look at the background of counseling psychology, you will have to look all the way back to the eighteen hundreds. One of the most famous, if not the most famous psychologist, would be Sigmund Freud who was also a professor that established his own office of clinical practice in the year 1886. The first counseling psychologist that founded one of the initial counselor clinics was Lightner Witmer in the year 1896. Sigmund Freud discovered many controversial methods of treatment as well as a number of controversial theories about how the human mind works. When the year 1896 came around, Freud had extended a new way to converse with clients that was considered to be ridiculous and preposterous. A number of studies done by Sigmund Freud dealt with the history of his patients and how that affected the way that they deal with their past and future. Therefore he used these studies and incorporated it into his methods of counseling psychology by developing psychoanalysis. As the years passed, a counseling psychologist by the name of Carl Rogers invented a way to engage in the specific patient’s many experiences. This method of counseling psychology is now referred to as the Humanistic method and has become the most commonly practiced method of psychologists today.

All of the many studies that have been performed by these counseling psychologists throughout history have the purpose of helping people overcome specific life dilemmas. Different studies of research based on theories are done in order to better understand the human mind. Counseling psychology has become a necessary part of the world in order to better understand the human behavior in different situations. Through the better understanding of the human mind we can see why certain events have taken place in history as well. The continued practice of counseling psychology is necessary for many reasons including helping people deal with the difficult stressful aspects of today’s world. A great example of this situation is how many counseling psychologists were needed after terrible events such as the 9.11 attacks and numerous amounts of school shootings. Although not everything in history can be explained through the study of psychology; it is a giant leap in the evolutionary aspect of the world.
