Perhaps the most important stage of development, both physically and psychologically, is during the adolescent years of a human being. Children spend a large portion of their time of the day in schools, and it is imperative that school counseling is conducted to the utmost proper procedure to serve a meaningful purpose. The every day agenda of a school counselor can quickly become a very articulate and lengthy one, especially at schools of bigger sizes.

One of the most crucial character traits that a school counselor must possess is open-mindedness and a passion to interact and work with students of varying ages. School counseling is a manner of very high priority in most, if not all, of school districts all across the nation. A school counselor must be able to truly understand children and empathize with them in a variety of issues and situations that may be brought up. A school counselor is also responsible to guiding students in the right direction of pursuing higher education and aiming for success. School counseling may seem more important towards the end of a student’s secondary education as they get ready for colleges and universities, but the job of a primary school counselor can be just as important as a secondary school counselor. Without a strong foundation and a core set of morals and beliefs, school counseling will not be as effective in the later years of a student’s time in school.

Along with guiding and assisting students, school counseling also deals with creating certain programs and curriculums for students to truly grow and obtain the most efficient and effective education. A school counselor will usually work with a school counselor from different districts to discuss and develop programs, both intra and extracurricular, to strengthen the foundation and core beliefs of the students to lead a successful life. These programs designed by a school counselor have been proven to keep kids out of trouble and maintain a positive and constructive attitude both inside and outside of the classroom.

A school counselor will also work closely with teachers throughout the school to maintain and keep track of the progress that any given student makes. When a school counselor collaborates with other members of the staff, it becomes easier to find particular students who may require some extra assistance, or even students who need to be challenged more educationally. The communication between a school counselor and various members of the school staff is imperative to make the relation between school counselor and student more effective and efficient.

School counseling is a job that requires concentration, dedication, passion, and a love for students. A school counselor may feel overwhelmed at times of high pressure and stress however; the rewards far outweigh the risks and trials of school counseling. Many students who go on to colleges and universities, medical schools, law schools, and other graduate programs will often remember their school counselor very well, for a little bit of effective school counseling can go a far, far way in a student’s life.
